Galleries & Exhibitions in Liverpool

Liverpool does galleries properly, and much of it costs nothing. FACT Liverpool, right in the centre, is free and has art installations, an arthouse cinema and a monthly relaxed screening with the lights left up. Tate Liverpool is also free, currently based at RIBA North round Albert Dock while its main building's redone, with a family art trail to follow. For Beatles history there's the Beatles Story, from £16, with a recreated Cavern Club, a café and baby change, and the Liverpool Beatles Museum, from £8.50 and best for ages 5 and up, packing over 1000 original items across three floors. If you want free and easy-going, start with FACT Liverpool or Tate Liverpool, or head out to Birkenhead for the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum, free with a café and parking that won't cost you a penny. Warrington Museum & Art Gallery, a longer trip out from the centre, is free too and runs Saturday craft drop-ins. Quirky Quarter, from £15, is the one for older kids who fancy illusion rooms and puzzles built for photos rather than quiet contemplation.
