What it’s like
Free wide-angle art exhibitions and a family art trail round Albert Dock, currently based at RIBA North while the main building's redone.
There's no entry fee here, which makes it an easy one to slot into a day out without committing to a full afternoon. Kids can follow the Mildred's Albert Dock Art Trail, which gives younger visitors something to actually do rather than just look, and there are wide-angle exhibitions to wander round at your own pace. It's not a hands-on children's museum, so it suits a family who's happy with a slower, look-and-talk kind of visit rather than one chasing buttons to press.
Worth knowing before you turn up: the gallery has temporarily moved to RIBA North while its usual Royal Albert Dock home gets redeveloped, so this isn't the building you might be picturing. On the morning of Monday 28 September, Gallery 2 is closed for an event, which is a faff if that's the one day you'd planned around.
It's open every day, 10am to 5.50pm, and there's no booking needed. Wheelchairs are available to borrow for the visit, and there's an accessible toilet and baby change on site. James Street station is about two minutes away if you're coming by train, and there's underground parking nearby at Q-Park Liverpool ONE if you're driving in.
It's closed over Christmas, on the 24th, 25th and 26th of December 2026, so don't turn up expecting it to be open over that stretch.
