What it’s like

Contemporary art exhibitions and children's art classes in a free-to-browse gallery, with weekend hours squeezed into a Saturday morning.

The exhibitions change regularly, with work from local, regional, national and international artists, so it's not a one-visit-and-you've-seen-it-all sort of place. Kids can look round the current show, and there are also regular art classes for children if you want them doing more than looking, plus seasonal family activities that pop up through the year.

It suits a quieter kind of visit rather than a big day out. There's no huge queue of things to do, just the art itself. Wheelchair access and an accessible toilet are both there, which helps if you're juggling a pushchair or a wheelchair user in the group.

Timing needs a bit of care. It's open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm with last entry at 4:30pm, but Saturday is a short window, 10am to 1pm with last entry at 12:30pm, and it's shut on Sundays. Worth knowing too that the gallery closes to the public entirely during exhibition changeovers, so a spontaneous Saturday morning visit could land on a closed door if the show's being swapped out.
