What it’s like
Free wander round art and museum collections in Birkenhead, with a café and a car park that won't cost you a penny.
Getting in costs nothing, which makes this an easy one to slot into a wet afternoon. You wander through the art exhibitions and museum collections at your own pace, and there's no ticket desk to queue at or timed slot to plan around. It's not a hands-on children's museum with buttons to press, so this suits kids who can cope with looking rather than doing, and a good stretch of the visit is quiet gallery walking.
The café is the bit that makes it work as a family outing rather than just a culture stop. They call themselves a child-friendly café, and there's a proper food offer, hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, salads, cakes and classic dishes, though hot food orders stop at 4pm most days (8pm on Fridays). Friday is also the long day, open till 9pm with last entry at 8:30, so it's worth knowing if you fancy a later look round rather than the usual 5pm finish.
Parking is free and on-site, off Mather Road, which takes the sting out of a spontaneous visit. The one thing they flag themselves is that the car park gets properly busy during events, so if you're heading there for something specific it's worth turning up a bit early rather than banking on a space right by the door. Step-free access, an accessible toilet and a changing places facility are all there too, which matters if you're navigating a buggy or a wheelchair round the galleries.
There's no age guidance given. Baby change is on site if you've got a little one in tow, and the whole visit can be as short or as long as you like since there's no session to work around.
