What it’s like

Free galleries, changing exhibitions and a courtyard with live music most mornings, tucked into Frodsham's Castle Park.

Five galleries here, all free to wander, with a six-week rolling exhibition programme so it's rarely the same twice. Ground floor is step-free across four of the galleries, with a lift up to the fifth, and dogs are welcome the whole way round, café included. It's not a hands-on kids' museum, more a proper art space, so it suits children who'll happily look at paintings and printmaking rather than ones who need buttons to press.

The courtyard's the bit you'd plan around. There's free live music at 11am every day the centre's open, Tuesday to Saturday, and on a decent morning you could easily make a coffee and a browse into an hour without spending a penny beyond lunch. Workshops run too, covering painting, printmaking, drawing and craft, some centre-run and some artist-led, and you can book private sessions if you want to turn a visit into an activity rather than just a look round.

The Courtyard Café does light lunches and drinks, and it's clearly popular, they say it serves around 9,000 orders a year. Last food orders are 2:30pm though, which catches people out if you turn up expecting a late lunch. Parking's right next to the centre, with overflow space further along Castle Park or at the leisure centre if it's busy.

It's closed Sundays and Mondays, and opening hours shift a bit between winter and summer for the café, so the exact café times move around depending on the season. Worth building the visit around a Tuesday to Saturday morning if the live music's part of the draw.

Plan your visit

Is it free to get in?

Yes, the galleries are free. You'd only spend money in the café or on a workshop.

What are the opening hours?

Galleries are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. The café keeps slightly shorter hours and they're closed Sunday and Monday.

Do we need to book?

No booking needed just to visit the galleries or catch the music. Workshops are the bit you'd book ahead, either through the centre or directly with the artist running it.

Is there parking?

There's parking right next to the centre, with overflow space elsewhere in Castle Park or at the nearby leisure centre if that's full.

Can we bring the dog?

Dogs are welcome everywhere on site, including inside the café.

What food is on offer?

The Courtyard Café does freshly made light lunches and drinks, but last orders are 2:30pm so lunchtime plans need to be earlier rather than later.

Is it wheelchair and buggy friendly?

Four of the five galleries are ground floor and step-free, and the fifth has lift access.
