If you want proper rides without leaving Sheffield behind, Gulliver's Valley out at Rotherham is the one to book, from £26 for ages 2 to 13, with dinos in Lost World and rides in Western World. Closer in, Summer Beach Club sets up each summer at Meadowhall with water slides and a small roller coaster for an afternoon. For something free and closer to the centre, Manor Fields Park has two playgrounds, a sandpit and Tudor ruins you're allowed to touch. Budget decides a lot here. Fun Park in Rotherham charges from £1 a ride, so it suits families topping up credit rather than paying one big entry fee.
