WHERE

Sheffield

What it’s like

Free park with two playgrounds, a sandpit and a boardwalk, plus Tudor ruins you can touch but not climb.

Two playgrounds and an interactive sandpit are the obvious draw, but there's more going on here than the usual swings and slide. A pondside boardwalk gives you somewhere flat to push a buggy while the kids peer at the water, and the parkletics equipment gives older ones something more physical to have a go on. In the school holidays there's a children's trail and craft sessions, which is worth timing your visit around if you've got a kid who needs a task rather than just a climbing frame.

It's free to get in, which counts for a lot when you're weighing up a day out. The site sits alongside the Tudor ruins at Sheffield Manor Lodge, and the rule there is look but don't touch the climbing bits: you can run your hands over 450 year old stonework, you just can't scramble up it. Worth knowing if you've got a child who treats every wall as a challenge.

Ground underfoot is a bit uneven in places because of buried archaeology, so it's not the smoothest terrain for a wobbly toddler or a scooter. The Turret House has a spiral stone staircase up to the top floors, which is charming if you fancy the climb but not one for a pushchair or anyone who struggles with steps.

The Rhubarb Shed Café does home cooked food and a proper kids' menu, plus vegan and gluten-free options, and it's picked up a Good Food Award for cafés this year. There's free parking at the City Road entrance and at Manor Oaks, with accessible bays at both, and it's an easy trip on the tram or bus from Sheffield Interchange if you're coming without a car.

Is it OK for a pushchair or wheelchair?

There's a level path on a slight incline into the Discovery Centre and a wheelchair to borrow on request, but the ground elsewhere can be uneven because of buried archaeology underneath.

Can the kids climb on the ruins?

They ask that you don't, the ruins are over 450 years old, but touching them is fine.

Can we bring the dog?

Dogs aren't allowed in the Tudor grounds except on monthly Doggy Days, but they're welcome at the café's outside tables.
