WHERE

Clitheroe

What it’s like

A field full of vintage steam engines, funfair rides, donkey rides and a stunt show over three days in Clitheroe.

Steam engines and vintage tractors fill the show field, and you're free to wander round them between the funfair rides, a digger play pen and donkey rides. There's a Punch and Judy show for the younger ones, dog agility displays in the arena, and Dangerous Steve doing whatever a stunt show called Dangerous Steve involves. It runs 10am to 5pm across the Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the late May bank holiday, and you could easily fill the whole stretch if you catch the arena entertainment and live music as well as the rides.

Under-12s get in free, which takes the sting out of £14 for an adult. Over-12s and senior citizens are £11. There's no need to book, and parking's free with spaces allocated by stewards when you arrive, plus a shuttle bus running between the village and the show field all day if you'd rather not walk it.

Worth knowing before you set off: this is a proper outdoor showground, grass underfoot and gradients in places, so pushchairs will struggle in some spots. Vehicles move around the field too, so it's not one where you can let a small child wander off on their own, steam engines and tractors included. On the plus side there's picnic space if you fancy bringing your own food to go with the on-site stalls, and dogs are welcome if yours is happy around crowds and diesel fumes.

It's not an adults-only event, but under-18s do need a responsible adult with them. Between the ice cream stalls, the digger pen and the donkeys, it's the kind of ground a five or six-year-old could happily spend the whole afternoon on, with the steam engines themselves as the bit that'll stick with the grown-ups.
