What it’s like
Free woodland park with a play area and walking trails, plus a hill worth the climb if you fancy the view.
The main event here is the woodland play area, with swings, a climbing frame and a climbing net for kids to get stuck into, tucked into ancient woodland rather than plonked on tarmac. Beyond that it's walking trails through the trees, and the site itself sits on a hillside, so be ready for steep paths and mostly unsurfaced ground if you're heading off the main route.
There's no entry fee, which makes it an easy one to just turn up to, though parking will cost you £3.30 for the day (motorcycles get in free, if that's your mode of transport). If you've got a buggy or need wheelchair access, there's a small circular route through the meadow that's flatter and easier going, but it's a shorter loop than the full woodland trails and won't take you to the play area if that's tucked further in.
Food-wise, there's a kiosk doing hot and cold drinks and snacks, but it only opens on school holidays and weekends between 10am and 4pm, so a midweek visit outside holiday time means bringing your own. Picnics are allowed if you want to make a proper afternoon of it, and dogs are welcome as long as they're on a lead or under close control.
Opening hours stretch to 7pm in the summer months (April to September), dropping back to 4pm through October to March, so there's a decent window to plan around depending on the time of year. It's not a place with a café you can shelter in for hours if the weather turns, so this one works best on a dry day when the paths won't be a slog.
