Theatre On The Steps
WHERE
Bridgnorth
What it’s like
A little theatre down a flight of steps in Bridgnorth, with pantomimes and live shows plus a Youth Theatre for budding actors aged 5 to 25.
This is a proper small theatre, not a school hall with delusions of grandeur. Live drama, comedy, music and the pantomimes all happen here, tucked down Stoneway Steps off Bridgnorth High Street. If you're taking a child who's never sat through a live show before, a panto here is a gentle way in, small enough that nobody gets lost in a crowd of thousands.
The other half of what goes on is the Youth Theatre, which runs proper structured sessions rather than a one-off workshop. Intro Company covers ages 5 to 8, with details on that one still to be confirmed. Intermediate Company is 8 to 15 and meets Saturdays 9am to 11am at £14 a session, while Advancing Company is 12 to 17 and runs 11:30am to 2pm at £17.50. There's also a 16 to 25 company, but that one's auditioned, so it's a step up from the others. You don't need to audition for the younger groups, they just ask that new members come along to a free taster session first to see if it's a good fit.
Money-wise, enrolment is £10, then £7 an hour for other programmes beyond the main weekly sessions, which is worth factoring in if your child fancies more than one class. Fees for missed sessions aren't refunded, so a poorly Saturday is money down the drain rather than a make-up class.
The catch that'll actually affect your day is the walk in. There's no step-free access, the theatre only reached via pedestrian steps down from the High Street, so if you're pushing a buggy or someone in the family struggles with stairs, that's a real obstacle rather than a minor inconvenience. Parking is in one of the public car parks five to ten minutes away, and the box office keeps fairly modest hours, weekdays 10am to 4pm and Saturday mornings only until 1:30pm.
