What it’s like
Over a thousand restored motorcycles under one roof, with a guided tour if you want the highlights pointed out.
This is a museum for looking rather than pressing buttons, so it suits kids who like machines and don't mind a slow wander past cabinet after cabinet of chrome and paint. Over 1,000 restored motorcycles are on display, which is a proper collection, not a couple of rooms of leftovers. If your child would rather climb something, this probably isn't the visit, but for a bike-mad eight-year-old it'll be a highlight.
There's a guided 'Highlights' tour on offer if you'd rather someone walk you round and point out the machines worth stopping at, which is probably worth doing on a first visit so you're not just reading every single label. Being indoors, it's a solid wet-weather option, and it's open every day from 8:30 to 5:30 with last entry at 4:30.
It isn't cheap for what's essentially a look-round-a-collection day: £17 for an adult, £10 for a child aged 5 to 15, or £45 for a family ticket. One thing to know before you set off: it's cashless throughout, admissions, shop and food court, so leave the cash at home and bring a card. There's a gift shop and food on site, and it's wheelchair accessible if that matters for your visit.
Worth watching out for is the free entry weekend in late October, called Museum Live, which marks the museum's opening anniversary. It's shut over the Christmas and New Year period, from Christmas Eve through to New Year's Day.
