What it’s like
Three floors of real police history to explore yourselves, with a handling collection and dress-up to try along the way.
You're set loose across three floors here, working through the exhibits at your own pace rather than following a guide. There's a handling collection demonstration to catch and dress-up activities for the kids to have a go at, which is the bit that'll stick in a seven-year-old's head long after the display cases have blurred together.
It suits a family visit of about two hours, and last entry is 2pm, so a Wednesday to Saturday morning trip works better than trying to squeeze it in after lunch. Tickets aren't free, £6 for a child and £10 for an adult, though the family tickets bring it down a bit, £20 for one adult and up to three kids, £28 for two adults. You don't have to book ahead, but the site is upfront that weekends and school holidays can sell out, so turning up on spec is a gamble you might lose.
The no-cloakroom rule is a genuine faff if you've come into town with bags or a wheeled case, since neither is allowed inside. Pushchairs can be left in the shop, though that's at your own risk rather than a proper cloakroom setup. There's a small café for hot drinks and snacks, but nothing for warming bottles, and there's no parking on site, just pay-and-display nearby. Under-16s need an adult with them throughout, so this isn't one to drop older kids off at.

Do we need to book ahead?

Is there parking?
Nothing on site, just pay-and-display car parks nearby.
What about food?

It's suitable from age 3, and there's a baby-changing facility in the accessible toilet on the ground floor.
