What it’s like

Watch live glass making demonstrations, then let the kids design their own cameo glass on the digital screens.

The big draw here is the live glass making, hot glass being shaped in front of you, plus cameo glass engraving and hand-painted enamelling demonstrations that normally run Wednesday to Saturday. There's also a bank of digital screens where kids can design their own cameo glass pattern, which is the sort of thing that eats twenty minutes without anyone noticing.

There's a proper children's space too, with games, a library, activity sheets and trails, so it's not just a glass case museum where you're telling a seven-year-old not to touch anything. It suits kids from about four up to their mid-teens, with the trails and craft activities doing a lot of the work for the younger end and the live demos holding the older ones' attention.

Entry is £5 for a child, £10 for an adult, or £25 for a family ticket covering two adults and up to three kids. That's a fair asking price for a small independent museum, and they're upfront that it goes straight towards the £1,500 a week it costs to keep the place running without any government funding. Opening hours are the same block, 10:30am to 4:30pm, whichever day you go, though winter trims it down to Thursday to Saturday only.

One thing to note if you're planning a visit around September: the glass studio itself closes for maintenance from the 4th to the 23rd, though the museum and exhibitions carry on as normal. There's on-site parking including accessible and EV bays, and well behaved dogs on leads are welcome if you're bringing one along.
