What it’s like

Free house museum with a mouse trail to hunt round the rooms and a nine-hole pitch and putt outside.

The mouse trail is the bit that'll keep kids moving room to room, needle felt mice tucked round the house for them to spot. There's dressing up in the nursery room too, so younger ones get something hands-on rather than just looking at things behind glass. It's free to get in, which for a museum with a garden and a golf course attached is a proper find.

The pitch and putt is the obvious add-on, nine holes, but it's only running April to September, so if you're going in winter that's off the table. Opening hours shrink over the colder months as well, Saturday and Sunday only from 11 to 4, versus five days a week and longer hours in the warmer half of the year.

The Courtyard Café does hot and cold food and drinks, with hot food stopping at 3:30pm in summer and 2:30pm in winter, so don't roll up at 4 expecting a hot lunch. Access is step-free throughout with a lift to the first floor, though they're upfront that some surfaces and walkways round the site are uneven, worth bearing in mind with a buggy or wheelchair. Parking's free on site with Blue Badge spaces, and picnics are allowed if you'd rather bring your own.

There's no age range given for the activities, but a mouse hunt and dressing up point to it working best for younger kids, while the golf gives older ones something too.
