What it’s like
Wander among historic aircraft outdoors and climb into cockpits like the Vulcan bomber's.
This is one for kids who like big metal things they can actually get close to. The site has historic aircraft on show, and the bit that sticks is getting into real cockpits, the Vulcan among them, rather than just reading a label next to a wing. It suits the five to fifteen bracket best, since a lot of it is exhibits and explanation rather than hands-on play, so a toddler will probably tire of it faster than an eight-year-old obsessed with planes.
Because it's outdoor as well as indoor, a dry day makes a real difference to how much you get out of a visit. Entry is £5.95 for a child and £11 for an adult, or £32 for a family of two adults and three kids, which is a fair chunk for an afternoon but not out of line for a specialist museum. There's a café on site, and dogs are welcome in a dedicated part of it, so if you're bringing the family dog along it doesn't have to wait in the car.
Parking is free for up to 100 vehicles, including coaches, and there are reserved spaces for blue badge holders. Opening hours shift a little by season, 10am to 5pm from April to October and 10am to 4.30pm the rest of the year, so a winter visit gives you a shorter window to see everything. It's open every day except 24 to 27 December, which makes it a decent option even outside school holidays.
