What it’s like
Real ice skating in Tamworth, with skating aids for wobbly beginners and a snow slope, climbing wall and pools under the same roof.
The ice track is the main event, and it's real ice rather than the plastic stuff some places fob you off with. Open Skate is £10 and skate hire is thrown in, so you're not stung twice at the door. If you've got a nervous four-year-old, Little Skaters sessions come with Seal Pals or Penguin Pals to hold onto, which beats watching them cling to the barrier for an hour.
There's a Junior Skate Club for the fives-and-up who fancy getting properly good at it, and SEN Skate sessions run with no music or flashing lights if that matters for your child. Helmets are compulsory for anyone aged 2 to 16, and honestly that's one rule that's easy to live with rather than a faff.
Once the skates come off there's a real snow slope for skiing and snowboarding, a Snow Fun Park with a giant slide, and a climbing wall with 15 different lines for the over-fours who've decided ice wasn't enough excitement for one day. All the specialist gear for the snow slope, skis, boards, boots, poles, is included in admission. A family of four can do Open Ice for £40, which works out the same as paying individually but saves you doing the maths at the till.
Parking is £2.50 for up to two hours and £4 if you go over, with £20 for anyone daft enough to stay past 12 hours. If you're just dropping off, the first ten minutes are free. Spectators don't pay a penny, and Aspen's Bar & Kitchen has a balcony over the main slope if you'd rather watch than wobble.
