Cocks Moors Woods Leisure Centre
WHERE
Birmingham
What it’s like
A local leisure centre with a pool, sports courts and party rooms, running from early morning to late most nights.
This is a proper community leisure centre rather than a single big attraction, so what you get depends on what you book. There's a pool with hoist access and accessible showers poolside, sports halls and courts you book through the MORE membership system online, and a studio that doubles as party space. If you want a swim, note the pool keeps shorter hours than the rest of the centre at weekends, closing at 4pm on Saturday and Sunday while the gym and general centre run till 6pm.
Birthday parties get 45 minutes in the studio, which is enough for games and a bit of chaos but not a long affair. The catch is food: they don't provide any, so you're bringing your own cake and snacks, and you'll want to keep the allergen information handy since they ask for it. Pool parties have their own supervision rule too, one adult per two children under 8, which is worth factoring in if you're inviting a big group of small swimmers.
Parking's free on site, which takes the sting out of a visit, and there are disabled bays close to the entrance. If you're coming without a car, several bus routes stop nearby. Thursday afternoons between 1 and 3 are billed as the quiet slot, useful to know if you want to avoid the after-school and evening crowd.
Lockers need a £1 coin or your own padlock. The café doesn't run all day, so don't plan on it being open whenever you fancy a coffee.
