What it’s like

Retro arcade tokens, pinball and a laser tag arena in one Birmingham venue, with a bar serving snacks and soft drinks.

The laser tag is the headline act here, six-minute games in the arena for £5 a go or £9 for two if the first one leaves them wanting revenge. It's a proper 15-minute session in and out, so it's not the kind of thing you build a whole afternoon around on its own, but it's the sort of thing that gets asked for again on the drive home.

The rest of the place runs on tokens rather than a flat entry fee. £9.50 gets you 15 tokens, £13 gets you 25, and games eat either one or two tokens a play, so a fiver's worth of arcade credit can vanish faster than you'd think if the kids are hopping between machines. There's Dance Dance Revolution, pinball and a mix of retro and modern consoles, and the consoles themselves are free to play, though the site is upfront that they'd rather you bought a drink while you're at it.

Food is crisps and sweet snacks from the bar rather than anything you'd call a meal. Card and cash both work, the bar's wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet, and opening hours stretch late into the evening on weekends, though the venue reads more like a bar with games attached than a dedicated kids' arcade, worth bearing in mind if you're planning around younger children.

Birthday parties get proper packages, the Silver at £26 a head for tokens and two drinks, or Gold at £32 for tokens and three, which starts to look like a night out for the grown-ups as much as a party for the kids.

  • Laser tag sessions are short, six-minute games within a 15-minute slot, so it suits a quick blast rather than a long visit
  • Tokens run out quicker than you'd expect if several games cost two tokens a play
  • Only physical passports or driving licences count as ID, photos on a phone won't do
  • Music leans old school hip hop and RnB, which sets the tone more bar than kids' arcade
