What it’s like
Amateur theatre with plays, a cinema and a Tuesday-night youth theatre group for 11 to 18 year olds.
This is a community theatre run by the Highbury Players, with two strands worth knowing about if you've got kids. There's Highbury Youth Theatre, meeting Tuesday evenings for young people aged 11 to 18, which is the obvious one to book onto if your child fancies actually getting on stage rather than just watching. And there's the regular programme of plays and cinema screenings, which is more of a family theatre trip than a kids' activity as such.
The catch with the plays and films is that nobody tells you the age suitability up front, so you're relying on knowing the production or asking before you commit an evening to it. Cost-wise a play is £12 for members or £14 for non-members, and that non-member price quietly includes a £2 seasonal membership. Cinema is cheaper at £5 for members and £7 for non-members. If you know you'll be back more than once or twice, the Season Voucher book works out at £10 a seat across seven plays, though it's members-only and there are only 100 books sold each year.
Booking is where this one gets fiddly. There's no online link mentioned beyond needing a membership number, and the box office itself only opens Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9, Wednesday mornings 10 to 12, or in the 45 minutes before curtain on play nights for that evening's tickets. Miss those windows and you're stuck, so if you want a specific date, sort it on a Monday or Wednesday rather than turning up on spec.
On access, there's a ramp, lift and chairlift, wheelchair positions and handrails, plus a hearing loop fitted in rows C to J. Food is available on site, though what's on offer isn't detailed, so don't plan your evening around a big meal there.
