What it’s like

Five themed escape rooms in Birmingham for teens and adults, booked online, no walking in off the street.

This is one for a group that wants to think rather than run about. Five different themed rooms, each with its own puzzles and clues to work through as a team, and from what they say a fair bit of it comes down to listening to each other rather than being the cleverest person in the room. Live actors turn up in some of the games to add atmosphere, but they won't grab you, which is one worry off the list if someone in your group is jumpy.

It's booked online in advance, no cash and no walk-ins, so this isn't a spontaneous Saturday decision. The room itself runs about an hour, though the slot in the calendar is 1.5 hours because they need the extra half hour to reset before the next group goes in. Pricing drops per head the bigger your group is: £28 each for two players down to £18 each for eight, so if you can rustle up a bigger gang it's noticeably better value than going as a pair.

The minimum age is 13, and under-16s need an adult with them. Two of the five games, Royal Heist Academy and Prison Punk 2077, are flagged as suitable for children and fine if you're epileptic, while the other three come with a warning to skip if that affects you. There's no parking on site, though they say there's parking nearby, so factor in a short walk if you're driving in.

What if we don't manage to escape in time?
