What it’s like

Locked-room puzzle games for kids 8 and up, with an outdoor City Hunt option if the weather's kind.

This is puzzle-solving under a bit of pressure. You and your team get shut in a themed room and have 60 minutes to crack clues and find your way out, with a game master watching on CCTV in case anyone genuinely panics. It's PG-rated and open from age 8, though anyone under 16 needs a paying adult in the room with them, so this is one for the older end of primary school and up rather than a toddler activity.

Pricing works on a sliding scale that rewards a bigger group: two players pay £30 each, but a full team of six drops to £21 a head, so it's worth rounding up a few extra kids or parents before you book rather than going in small. Budget around 90 minutes for the whole visit once you count the briefing and the photo lounge afterwards, with the actual room time capped at an hour. Card only here, so don't turn up planning to pay cash.

If the escape room feels a bit intense for your crew, or you fancy being outside instead, City Hunt is the outdoor alternative at £15 a player, with under-8s going free alongside two paying adults. It runs rain or shine with ponchos handed out, though the site is upfront that severe weather can force a cancellation or a switch indoors. A full City Hunt session takes longer, around two and a half hours with briefing and downtime included.

Worth knowing before you book: some of the escape room games use smoke machines, strobes and lasers, which is fine for most kids but worth thinking about if anyone's sensitive to that sort of thing. There's no refund if someone in your group doesn't show up on the day, so chase your mates for a firm headcount first. The venue's bang in the city centre, a couple of minutes from New Street station, with Snow Hill car park a short walk if you're driving in.
