What it’s like

Sixty minutes locked in a themed room cracking around twenty interlinked puzzles as a team, with kids allowed if an adult plays too.

You get an hour on the clock to solve your way out, with roughly twenty puzzles chained together across the room, so it's proper problem-solving rather than one big lock at the end. There's searching, spotting things, opening locks, that sort of thing, but no running or climbing. The Labyrinth room does involve crawling, worth knowing if knees or mobility are an issue.

There's no set lower age limit, which sounds generous until you read the small print: anyone under 16 has to be accompanied by a paying adult, so this isn't a drop-and-go activity. The site reckons most rooms suit age 7 upwards, and steers first-timers towards Blackmail, where the puzzles start easy and ramp up as you go. The Mystic's Cabin is flagged as having mature themes, so probably one to skip with younger children.

At £20 a head it adds up fast for a family of four, though students, Blue Light cardholders and veterans get a discount if that applies to you. Rooms take two to six players, with four working best, so a couple of kids and a couple of adults is about the sweet spot. Budget about an hour and a half all in once you count the brief and debrief either side of the game itself.

Turn up on time or risk your session getting cut short or cancelled outright, they're firm on that. Parking's free, tucked behind a gym off Camden Street, and it's a walkable twenty minutes from New Street if you fancy stretching your legs first. One thing to flag if you're pushing a buggy or need step-free access: there's a step at the entrance and more steps up to reception.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£20 per person, whatever the room. Students, Blue Light cardholders and veterans get a discount, worth checking if you qualify.

Do we need to book?

Yes, booking's required and there's a link on their site. Turn up late and your game can be shortened or cancelled with no refund.

How old do the kids need to be?

There's no set minimum age, but anyone under 16 needs a paying adult with them. Most rooms are pitched at 7 and up, and Blackmail is the one they suggest for first-timers.

How long does a visit take?

The game itself is 60 minutes, but with the brief beforehand and debrief after you're looking at about an hour and a half.

Is it physical, will the kids be climbing about?

Not really, you're moving around finding and solving things rather than running or climbing. The Labyrinth room does involve some crawling though.

Is there parking?

Free parking behind The Pit gym off Camden Street. It's also a 20 minute walk from New Street or Snow Hill, or 10 from Jewellery Quarter station.

Is it wheelchair or buggy friendly?

There's a step at the entrance and further steps up to reception.
