Pantomime & Family Theatre in Edinburgh

Panto season in Edinburgh itself centres on Leith Theatre, a 1930s art deco building where tickets start from £2 and you can currently take the kids on a heritage tour while the restoration work goes on. For the full stage experience, it's a drive out to Fife, where Dunfermline has two options: the Alhambra Theatre, with a Christmas panto full of daft jokes and festive chaos from £25, and Carnegie Hall, with a bar open through the interval for the grown-ups. If you want cheaper tickets, Lochgelly Centre starts from £5 and doubles as a cinema, with a café for a bake afterwards. Kirkcaldy has two more choices: Kings Theatre, an unnumbered-seat venue for panto and comedy, and Adam Smith Theatre, from £6.50, with a changing places facility and a bistro café for lunch before curtain up. For toddlers, high chairs at Lochgelly and Adam Smith make lunch or a snack easier to manage.
