Steam Railways & Boat Trips in Edinburgh
Edinburgh's version of this is mostly coach tours and canal boats rather than proper steam railways, though the Jacobite steam train from the Harry Potter films turns up on longer trips with Highland Explorer Tours and Haggis Adventures (the latter strictly 18+). For actual boats, the Lochrin Belle does private hire along the Union Canal from the city, while out at South Queensferry, Maid of the Forth and Forth Boat Tours both sail under all three bridges, with the option to carry on to Inchcolm Island's abbey. For toddlers, the Union Canal towpath is free to walk and links up with cycling and the Falkirk Wheel if you want a longer day. Forth Boat Tours takes ages 0 to 15, so it works for younger children, while The Hairy Coo's coach tours are pitched at seven and up. If you fancy a canal boat and a museum together, it is a longer trip out to Linlithgow for the Avon Aqueduct, running weekend afternoons in spring and summer. Haggis Adventures is for adults only, so leave the kids at home for that one.
