What it’s like
Multi-day Highland coach tours from Edinburgh taking in Loch Ness, Glen Coe and the Jacobite steam train, but strictly over-18s only.
This one's not for the kids. The minimum age across every tour is 18, so if you're picturing a family day out, this isn't it. It reads more like the trip you'd book for yourself once the school holidays are over and you fancy a proper adventure round the Highlands.
The route takes in some big-ticket Scotland: the Jacobite Steam Train, a search for Nessie at Loch Ness, Glen Coe, Eilean Donan Castle and the Cuillin mountains on Skye if you get that far north. It's a coach and guide setup, with hostel multi-share accommodation thrown into the price. Meals aren't included, which is fair enough since everyone eats differently on holiday, but budget for it separately.
Worth knowing before you book: some stops are on rough ground or only reachable by steps, and the Highland hostels often don't have lifts, so there's stair-climbing involved most days. Luggage is capped at 15kg, and anything over that risks getting left behind, which seems a harsh way to find out you've overpacked. A few of the extra activities on route cost £10 to £20 on top, so the headline price isn't quite the whole story.
Wheelchair users can join if the chair folds down for the luggage hold, but the guides can't physically help you on or off the coach. Dogs are welcome too, assistance dogs always and smaller dogs generally easier to bring along, but you need to give them notice ahead of time.

Plan your visit
Is this suitable for kids?
No, the minimum age on every tour is eighteen. There's no upper age limit though, just a reasonable level of fitness and a sense of fun.
What's actually included in the price?
Transport by coach, a guide, and hostel multi-share accommodation. Meals aren't included so you can eat to your own budget.
Do we need to book ahead?
Booking isn't required, though there is a booking link if you want to sort it in advance. You can also book in person at the Royal Mile office.
Are there extra costs once we're on tour?
Some activities along the route cost extra, usually £10 to £20 each. A few can be paid for at booking, others locally on the day.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Folding wheelchairs can be stored in the luggage hold, but guides can't help you board or get off the coach physically. You'd want a companion along who can assist with that.
Can we bring a dog?
Assistance dogs are always fine, and smaller dogs are generally easier to bring. Give them 48 hours notice for day tours, or arrange it at booking for the multi-day ones.
How much should we budget per day for food and extras?
They suggest around £40 a day for meals and optional activities. A pint's about £6 and a whisky around £7, and most hostels have self-catering kitchens if you want to keep costs down.
