Adventure Parks & High Ropes in Edinburgh
Edinburgh does adventure with trees and ropes rather than just climbing frames. Alien Rock, close to the centre, has indoor climbing for kids from five, top rope through to lead climbing under one roof. Out at Dalkeith, Go Ape strings zip lines and rope bridges through the trees above the River Esk from age four, and Fort Douglas next door has turreted treehouses and a bike track for the under-12s, with entry from £3. Air Thrill in Edinburgh runs an indoor inflatable park with a Saturday morning slot just for under-fives. For toddlers, AirHop in Musselburgh has a softplay corner alongside the trampolines, and Almondell & Calderwood Country Park in Broxburn is free, with a toddler and junior play area and paths for bikes. Older children and teenagers get the rougher stuff: MadMax Adventures in Kirknewton has off-roading, axe throwing and archery from age 12, and Ocean Vertical is a Dunbar meeting point for a driven-out day of coasteering and surfing, a longer trip but built entirely for 14 to 18 year olds. Most of this is outdoors, so check the weather before you set off.
