What it’s like
Surf lessons and a wave pool that pumps out 1,000 waves an hour, in a man-made lagoon outside Edinburgh.
This is a wave pool built for surfing, not splashing about, so the whole day revolves around getting your kid on a board. Beginners start with a lesson from a qualified instructor, and from there it's SurfSkate Academy sessions, improver surf sessions, or one of the kids' surf camps if you want to make a proper trip of it. There's a café bar where you can watch from the side if you're not going in yourself, and a 60-acre country park with walking trails for whoever's waiting their turn.
The catch is the swim test: kids need to manage 25 metres unaided and be genuinely confident in water before they're allowed near the waves, so this isn't one for a nervous six-year-old who fancies a go. Wetsuits are compulsory too, and if you haven't got your own it's £8 on top of whatever session you've booked, which stings a bit when a group SurfSkate slot is already £22.50 a head. A private one-to-one lesson runs to £65, and a full surfing weekend climbs past £185, so this is a save-up-for-it day rather than a spontaneous one.
Food comes from three kitchens, a bar, café and the Canteen restaurant, and they all do takeaway if you'd rather eat outside watching the waves. It's card only across the whole site, no cash, and you can't bring your own food into the restaurant or its outdoor seating. Booking ahead is advised, especially for lessons, though the site says walk-ins are welcome if there's space.
Getting there is easier than you'd think for a surf resort: a Surf Bus runs straight from central Edinburgh, about 25 minutes, and it's close to the airport too if you're combining it with a flight. There's parking on site, including 16 blue badge bays and EV charging, and the resort says it's fully accessible with proper accessible lodges if you're staying over.
