What it’s like
Indoor climbing for kids from five, with top rope, bouldering and lead climbing under one roof.
This is a proper climbing centre rather than a soft play with a wall stuck on the side. From five, kids can try top rope climbing and bouldering over the mats, with lead climbing there for anyone who progresses further. If you just want to test the water first, the taster session is £40 for a group of up to three, gear included.
Under eights need a parent right there for the whole session, not just dropped at the door. If you're not climbing yourself you get in free while you supervise, which softens the blow a bit. Once you've done the parent and child course together though, you're allowed to come back and climb unsupervised with up to two kids of any age, no booking needed, which is the bit that makes the £55 course actually pay off over time.
For over eights there's a weekly kids' club at £16 a session, NICAS accredited, so it's a proper structured award scheme rather than just an hour of messing about on the wall. Entry pricing changes with the clock: off-peak weekday adult tickets are £11.50, rising to £13.50 after 4pm and all weekend, with under 16s at £7.80 or £8.30 depending on timing. Boot hire is £3.50 if nobody in the family owns a pair. There's on-site parking, and the place stays open until 10pm on weekdays, useful if you fancy squeezing a climb in after school.
Birthday parties are for eight and up, 1.5 hours, £96 for a group of six with gear hire included. Worth knowing you can also use both alien climbing centres on the same day pass, so if you fancy bouldering at one and lead climbing at the other, a single ticket covers it.
