What it’s like
Drive your own car through four miles of lions, giraffes and rhinos, then park up for rides and walk-through animal zones.
You stay in the car for the main event here, which feels odd the first time but works: four miles of driving through habitats with lions, tigers, rhinos and giraffes wandering close enough to see properly. After that you park up and walk, and there's a lot to walk to. The African Walking Trail gets you nearer to elephants and giraffes on foot, and Tiger Tropics and Lion Ridge are where the big cats are. There's also a walk-through section with penguins, hippos, lemurs, sea lions and meerkats, plus a dinosaur exhibit with daily feeds and talks that'll probably be the bit a six-year-old brings up at teatime.
Once the animals are done there's a theme park side too, with rides like the Snake Slide and Flying Lions. That's an add-on though, not included in the basic ticket, so decide before you go whether it's worth the extra £8.75 on top or the combined wristband ticket from £26.20. Booking online is cheaper than turning up on the day, and it's the only way to guarantee entry on a specific date. There's also a free return visit within six months if you book online, which softens the sting of the price a bit.
Food is spread across several restaurants doing pizza, fish and chips, burgers and the usual kids' menu stuff, with vegan and gluten-free options too, though on quieter days not every outlet is open. Parking is free on site, which is one less thing to budget for. Pushchairs and wheelchairs can be hired by the day if you haven't brought your own, and there's an accessible minibus tour for anyone who can't do the driving trail themselves, though that needs booking in advance rather than online.
Given the driving and the walking trails on top, this isn't a quick in-and-out visit. Set aside most of a day if you want to do the safari drive, the walking trail and the animal enclosures without rushing any of it.
