What it’s like

Walk round outdoor aviaries to see eagles, hawks and owls up close, then watch a proper flying display.

This is a birds of prey place through and through, and the flying displays are the reason to time your visit. There's one at 1pm all year round, with a second at 3:30pm from March to October, so summer visitors get two chances to see the birds actually do their thing rather than just sit on a perch looking magnificent. The site's upfront that it's weather permitting, which is fair enough for birds that don't fancy flying in a gale.

Between displays there's a proper wander round the aviaries to see eagles, hawks, falcons and owls at close quarters, plus a children's activity trail to keep younger ones moving rather than just staring at cages. It's all outdoors, and pushchairs get round fine, but there's no indoor fallback if the heavens open, so a wet day means waterproofs rather than a change of plan.

Entry's £8 for an adult and £4 for a child, or £21 for a family ticket covering two adults and two children, which works out cheaper than paying separately if you've got the standard setup. Under-4s are free. It's not a huge spend for an afternoon, and an afternoon really is what you should plan for rather than a quick hour.

There's a café on site for coffee, a light lunch or afternoon tea, and picnics are allowed if you'd rather bring your own. Winter opening is shorter, 11am to 2:30pm rather than 11am to 5pm, and the place shuts on Mondays through the winter months too, so check which season you're visiting in before you plan the day around it.

No, you can just turn up during opening hours.

Is it open all year?

Yes, though it's closed on Mondays from November to February, and also closed on Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

When are the flying displays?

There's one at 1pm every day of the year, with a second at 3:30pm running from March to October. They're weather permitting, so a really wild day might see one cancelled.
