What it’s like

Free nature trails through a nature reserve where kids can spot dragonflies and birds without you booking a thing.

This is trail walking rather than an attraction with a gift shop at the end, and that's the appeal. The paths are self-guided, so you set the pace, whether that's a proper yomp or a stop-start amble with a toddler who wants to look at every stick.

The site lists Daphne Pool as the spot for dragonflies, which is a proper thing to hunt for with a kid armed with a jam jar and a bit of patience. Birdwatchers get something too, with Linnets and Reed Buntings both listed as species you might spot if you're quiet and a bit lucky. Nobody's promising the birds will turn up on cue, but that's nature for you.

It costs nothing to get in and there's no booking link, so this is the sort of place you decide on that morning rather than planning weeks ahead. The trails are described as suitable for all abilities, which is reassuring if you've got a buggy or a relative who doesn't move as fast as they used to.
