What it’s like
Free hills to climb, an adventure play area and waymarked trails, with a café for when everyone's flagged.
Getting in costs nothing, which is the first thing worth knowing, though parking is £3 for the day and card only, so don't turn up expecting to pay in coins. Once you're through the gate there are proper hills to climb with panoramic views at the top, an adventure play area for the climbing-frame crowd, and enough open grass for a kickabout that doesn't need any equipment beyond a ball.
The trails are the other big draw. The Skylark Trail is half a mile and doable with a robust pushchair, though it has some steep, grassy sections that'll test your arms more than the pushchair's suspension. The Rabbit Trail is a longer three-mile loop, but it's not suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters or pushchairs, so save that one for when the kids can walk it themselves.
The Windmill Café is open 10 to 4 every day except Christmas Day, doing hot and cold drinks, homemade meals, cakes and ice cream, which is handy given there's not much else nearby to duck into. Dogs are welcome around the park generally, and the visitor centre, picnic area and play area are all built to be wheelchair accessible across rolled stone and grass.
Opening hours shift with the seasons, and the North car park closes noticeably earlier in winter, 4:30pm against an 8pm summer finish, so a winter afternoon visit needs a bit more planning than a July one. If a birthday's on the cards, there's a meeting room available to hire at £50, useful if you want a base to retreat to rather than relying entirely on the weather.

Plan your visit
Is it free to get in?
Yes, entry to the park itself is free. Parking is £3 for the day, card payment only, or £50 for an annual pass.
Do we need to book?
No booking needed, you just turn up.
Is it OK for a pushchair?
The Skylark Trail, half a mile, works with a robust pushchair though it has steep grassy bits. The three-mile Rabbit Trail isn't suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
What's there for younger kids?
There's an adventure play area, open grass for a kickabout, and the shorter Skylark Trail if you want a walk that won't take all afternoon.
What about food?
The Windmill Café is open 10am to 4pm daily except Christmas Day, with hot meals, cakes, drinks and ice cream.
How long do people stay?
That depends on which trail you pick. The Skylark Trail is a short half-mile loop, while the Rabbit Trail is three miles and a proper walk.
Is there parking?
A North and a South car park, both £3 a day on card only. Blue badge holders park free.
Can we bring the dog?
Dogs are welcome across the park, though only assistance dogs can go into the visitor centre.
What about wheelchair access?
The visitor centre, picnic area, play area and meeting room are all accessible across rolled stone and grass. The Rabbit Trail isn't suitable for wheelchairs.
Can we do a birthday here?
There's a meeting room available to hire at £50, though note BBQs aren't allowed unless you've hired the space.
