Ward End Park
WHERE
Birmingham
What it’s like
A lake to walk round, a playground to burn through an afternoon on, and courts for tennis or basketball if you've brought a ball.
The lake is the spine of the place. Paths are well laid, so it's an easy push if you've got a buggy or a toddler on a scooter, and there's enough going on with the water to keep smaller kids distracted between playground visits. Spotting wildlife along the way is the sort of thing that turns a ten-minute walk into forty.
The playground gives you somewhere to park yourself while the kids get on with it, and if you've got older children who want more than swings, there's a tennis court and a basketball court to use. It's a decent way to split a visit: quiet lakeside stroll first, then let the energy out on the courts once everyone's had enough of walking.
One thing to know before you set off: there are no toilets on site, so plan your visit round that if you've got a small one who needs to go at short notice. Ward End Park House itself isn't open to the public either, so don't build a visit around getting inside, it's really about the grounds.
