What it’s like

A regimental history museum in Lichfield with free parking and picnic space, open daily with last entry at 3pm.

This one is for military history rather than hands-on play, so it suits kids who already like a good story about medals, uniforms and old regiments over ones after buttons to press. The Staffordshire Regiment Museum and Mercian Regiment Archive covers that ground properly, and there's a picnic area outside if you want to break the visit up rather than push through in one go.

It's open every day, 10 till 4, with last admission at 3pm. Entry is £8.50 for adults and £5.50 for kids aged 3 to 16, or £30 for a family ticket covering two adults and up to four children, which works out sensible if there's more than one child in tow. If you pay UK tax, the Gift Aid option gets you free re-entry for a year, handy if you fancy a second look at the archive bits you rushed past first time.

Parking's free and there's a dog-friendly policy too. Baby change and accessible toilets are on site. One thing to flag: the museum does close occasionally for private hire, and if snow or strong winds are forecast in winter they may alter hours.

If you're after research rather than just a wander round, that side needs booking ahead by email, it isn't a walk-in thing like the main galleries.
