What it’s like

Free art gallery with drop-in workshops, sensory sessions for babies, and a Costa on site for when everyone's had enough culture.

Getting in costs nothing, which makes it easy to pop in for half an hour or stay all afternoon without feeling you have to get your money's worth. Babies and toddlers get their own thing with Baby & Me, a multi-sensory session pitched at under-twos, and there's a Sunday Art Club for the slightly older ones who fancy a drop-in workshop rather than being dragged round looking at paintings. The Mini Makers sessions for two to five year olds run around £4, so it's not a big outlay even with a few of you.

Older kids and grown-ups get the Bloomberg Connects digital guide to poke about the collections with, which beats reading wall labels off a wall. There's also a free art library and resource area if anyone in your group wants to dig a bit deeper, and honestly it's a nice quiet corner to duck into if little legs need a sit down.

It's all indoors, so a rainy Walsall afternoon is exactly when this makes sense. The gallery closes at 4.30pm most days and a bit earlier on Sundays. There's a Costa on site if you need to refuel, and the shop's worth a browse for postcards or a craft kit on the way out.

Parking isn't on site.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

General entry is free. The workshops like Baby & Me and Mini Makers are around £4, and the Young Masters tote bag workshop is £5.

Do we need to book?

There's nothing on booking for general visits, so you can just turn up during opening hours.

What are the opening times?

Tuesday to Saturday it's 10am to 4.30pm, Sundays 11am to 4pm. Closed Mondays and bank holidays, which catches people out.

Is it suitable for a baby or toddler?

Yes, Baby & Me is a multi-sensory session aimed at ages 0 to 2, and Mini Makers covers ages 2 to 5.

Is there parking?

Not on site. Crown Wharf Retail Park, Frederick Street car park, Station Street and the Saddlers Centre are all local options.

What about food?

There's a Costa Coffee inside, open slightly longer hours than the gallery itself.

How long do people usually stay?

It's not a huge site, so a couple of hours covers the collections and a workshop without rushing.
