What it’s like

Free family trails, an art-making space and a Pop Art play area to explore, with the Warhol show a small add-on cost for adults.

Most of what's here costs nothing. Walk in and you can follow family trails through the exhibitions, let the kids loose in the Making Space to actually make something, and there's a Pop Art play area that sounds like the bit they'll want to go back to. General admission is free, which makes it an easy one to slot into a rainy Tuesday without worrying about wasting money if attention spans run short.

The one exception is the Andy Warhol: Art Star exhibition, where under 21s still get in free but adults and concessions pay £4.50. Not a huge outlay, but worth knowing before you plan the visit so it doesn't feel like a surprise at the desk.

It's a level building with lift access to every floor, so a buggy or a wheelchair isn't going to be a problem anywhere inside. The catch is parking: there isn't any on site, though there are accessible bays on Wulfruna Street outside the Arena Theatre. If you're coming by bus, train or tram you're better off, and they even knock 10% off in the café if you've arrived car-free, which is a nice touch for anyone who's given up the drive.

Hours are 10:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Saturday and a shorter 11am to 4pm on Sundays, so a Sunday visit means planning around a tighter window. There's a café on site too, though you'll want to book ahead if you're bringing a group.
