What it’s like
A city-centre gallery with changing contemporary art shows and workshops, and a lift to all three floors if you've got a buggy.
This is a proper gallery rather than a hands-on museum, so the appeal is walking round changing exhibitions of contemporary art and, from what they list, joining workshops and talks when they're on. That's going to suit a curious older child more than a toddler who wants buttons to press, though the lift to all three floors means a buggy isn't a problem if you do bring a younger one along.
It's open Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am to 5pm, so this isn't a Sunday plan or an after-school dash. There's no booking link listed, which suggests you can just turn up, though if a workshop's involved you'd want to check the timing works for your day.
Parking is the bit that needs a moment's thought before you set off. There's no dedicated car park at the gallery itself, but there's an NCP multi-storey opposite where booking ahead gets you a discount, plus meter parking round St Paul's Square for up to four hours. If you can time it for after 6pm or a Sunday, Northwood Street's pay-and-display goes free, which is worth knowing if you're flexible.
The building itself is properly accessible, with a lift to all three floors and an accessible toilet, so it's straightforward if you're navigating with a wheelchair or a pushchair.
