What it’s like
A community theatre putting on main stage plays and a long-running Christmas pantomime, plus a youth drama group for teenagers.
You go for a proper night at the theatre without the West End prices. The main stage runs plays Monday or Tuesday through to Saturday, usually kicking off at 7:30pm, and the pantomime gets a much longer run with afternoon and evening shows at weekends and 7pm performances midweek. Seating in the Studio isn't allocated, so you pick a block of squares rather than named seats, which is a bit different if you're used to picking your exact row.
Tickets are £20 for adults and £16.50 concession, and that concession band covers under-16s, students, unwaged patrons and seniors on Pension Credit. If there are ten or more of you going on the same date, you get 10% off, but it has to be booked together in one go. Tickets aren't refundable, though you can transfer to another date or get a credit note if you give more than 24 hours notice.
For teenagers keen on performing rather than just watching, there's a youth theatre group for 11 to 17 year olds running term-time workshops and putting on their own productions. You can apply from your tenth birthday, though you won't actually take part until you're 11, and it's worth knowing the waiting list currently runs 6 to 18 months, so this isn't a sign-up-this-week kind of thing. One genuine downside: the rehearsal rooms for youth theatre don't have step-free access, even though the main theatre, foyer and auditorium are fully accessible with wheelchair spaces available.
Parking is limited on both sides of the building, with two disabled bays, and they're upfront about telling you to avoid parking on the nearby roads instead. If accessibility is a factor for your visit, booking ahead is advisable so they can sort out one of the wheelchair spaces in the auditorium.
