Adventure Parks & High Ropes in Newcastle

Zip-wires, ropes and go-karts turn up all round this patch, not just in the city. Shiremoor Adventure Playground is free and close to the centre, with den-building huts and a separate area for under-eights. A drive out to Chester-le-Street gets you Holmside Park, from £9, with a 100 metre inflatable obstacle course and a toddler zone kept away from the bigger kit. Out at Durham, Adventure Valley mixes ponies and net climbs with soft play tucked in for wet days. For toddlers, Shiremoor's separate area and Holmside's toddler zone are the safer bets. Older children and teenagers get more from Infinite Durham Multi Activity Park's trampolines and crazy golf, or the Flight Simulator Centre in Newcastle, from £39.99 and booked ahead, ages 12 and up only. If money is tight, start free at Shiremoor. If you want a full day outdoors with food on site, Adventure Valley or Holmside Park cover that, rain or not.
