What it’s like

Free adventure playground with zip-wires, den-building huts and a small animal corner, plus a separate area for under-eights.

This is a proper outdoor adventure playground, not a fenced-in climbing frame. There are zip-wires, basket swings and a big wooden structure to climb over and hide in, plus tree houses and play huts where kids can build their own dens. There's a fenced wildlife pond to look at, an allotment where they grow their own veg, and small animals on site including chickens, guinea pigs and pigs. Fire pits run with Playworker support add something you don't often get at a normal park.

Under-eights get their own area away from the older kids, which is worth knowing if you've got a mix of ages in tow, though anyone under 8 still needs an adult with them the whole time. It's free to get in, which is the real headline here given how much there is to do, and it makes it an easy one to drop into for an hour without feeling like you have to make a day of it.

Hours shift between term time and school holidays. In term time it's afternoons on weekdays and a shorter midday slot at weekends, with a Thursday evening youth session tacked on. Holidays open it up to 11am-4pm most days. There's no need to book, you just turn up in the session times.

The small café is run by local volunteers and does drinks and snacks rather than a full menu, so it's worth eating beforehand if you're coming for a proper session. Parking on site is limited, though there's more nearby, and it's a 10-minute walk from Shiremoor Metro Station if you'd rather leave the car altogether. There's no WiFi, which for a playground like this is probably no bad thing.
