What it’s like
Quad bikes, clay pigeons, axe throwing and full-day paintball on a working outdoor site 45 minutes from Newcastle.
This is a proper outdoor pursuits site, not a soft-play afternoon: quad biking, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe and knife throwing, Segway safari and paintball, all outside and all needing a bit of grit from whoever's holding the trigger or the handlebars. Kids can quad bike from 6, and there's a Family Quad Trek if you fancy doing it alongside them rather than watching from the fence.
Paintball is the one to think through before you book. It's a full day, arrival's at 10 for a 10.30 start, and you can rack up to 12 games. Anyone under 11 is out and under-16s need a parent or guardian to sign the disclaimer, so this is a session for the older end of the age range rather than a family outing everyone joins together. There's no safe area for parents to watch either, which some will find freeing and others will find a bit odd standing about for.
Prices reflect the kit and the marshalling that goes into it: quad biking runs £48 for kids and £75 for adults, clay pigeon shooting is £60, archery and axe throwing sit around £40. None of it is pocket money stuff, but you're not queuing for a go-kart either. Birthday parties run 2.5 hours across three packages from £58 to £80 a child, which covers the same activity list, and lunch on paintball days is a hotdog, a drink and a chocolate bar, with vegetarian options if you flag it a couple of days ahead.
Booking's by phone and they'd rather have two weeks' notice, though they'll try to squeeze you in last minute if you're stuck. Worth knowing before you set off: parking is limited to the hotel car park, there's nowhere to lock away valuables, and it's a taxi from the nearest public transport point if you're not driving. No alcohol on site either, so this one's dry fun in the most literal sense.

Plan your visit
How old do kids need to be to quad bike?
Six and up for kids' quad biking, and there's a Family Quad Trek if you want an adult and child riding together.
What age is paintball for?
Eleven's the minimum, no upper limit. Anyone under 16 needs a parent or guardian to sign a disclaimer before they play.
Can parents watch the paintball?
Once your child's signed in and you're happy to head off, you can leave. There's no viewing area, since it's not considered safe to have spectators near the games.
How long does paintball take?
The whole day. Arrival's at 10 for a 10.30 start and you could be playing up to 12 games, so don't plan much else for that Saturday.
Do we need to book ahead?
Phone booking, and they like two weeks' notice. Last-minute requests get squeezed in where they can.
What does lunch involve on paintball days?
A hotdog, a drink and a chocolate bar. Tell them if you need vegetarian at least two days before you play.
How much does it cost?
Kids' quad biking is £48, adult £75. Clay pigeon shooting is £60, archery and axe throwing are around £40 each. It adds up if you're doing more than one activity.
Does paintball happen in bad weather?
It goes ahead regardless, so pack proper footwear and clothes you don't mind getting muddy.
Can I bring my own paintball gun?
A Tipmann in good condition is fine, but the marshals check it over and have the final say.
What's included in birthday parties?
Sessions run 2.5 hours across three packages, £58 to £80 a child, drawing on the same activity list as the main site.
How do we get there without a car?
Public transport only gets you to a nearby point, then it's a taxi for the last stretch. Worth factoring into the day if you're not driving yourselves.
