Model Villages & Miniature Railways in Newcastle

This isn't really a model village and miniature railway city, but there's still a good day out to be had if you widen the net a bit. Out at North Shields, Stephenson Steam Railway is free to get in and has you climbing aboard a real heritage steam train, plus a meet with the world's third-oldest working locomotive, best for ages 4 and up. In Sunderland, North East Land, Sea and Air Museums lets you climb into a cold war Avro Vulcan bomber for from £4, with a play area for smaller ones. Closer to the centre, Grey's Monument charges from £7 for 164 steps and a proper view over the city, booked in half hour slots on select Saturdays. For free parking and outdoor space to roam, Stephenson Steam Railway is the one to pick. If you have toddlers in tow, the play area at North East Land, Sea and Air Museums buys you some breathing room while older ones explore the vehicles. Grey's Monument suits older children who can manage the stairs, and needs booking ahead since it only runs on select Saturdays.
