What it’s like

Guided tours round a preserved industrial railway, with rope-hauled wagons and real engineering history to look at up close.

A guide walks you round the old rope-hauled colliery railway, showing you the wagons, the winding gear and the bits of industrial history that don't usually get explained this well. It's a proper tour rather than a wander, so you're looked after for the full 90 minutes, and that's about right for kids who ask a hundred questions.

Bookings are for five-year-olds and up, and that age floor makes sense once you picture younger ones on the track crossings and uneven ground. There's staff on hand to help with those tricky bits if wheelchair access is a concern, though parts of the site are genuinely awkward underfoot.

It's only open Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 10am or 1pm, and you have to book your slot ahead rather than turning up on spec. That's a real faff if your week's already full, but the trade-off is a small, guided group rather than a crowd milling round on its own. At £5 for adults and £3 for a child it's cheap for what's a proper heritage day out, and the Easter Family Fun Day adds some extra activities if your visit lands on it.

£5 for an adult, £3 for a child aged 5 and up.

Do we need to book?

Yes, it's timed slots only, Tuesday or Thursday at 10am or 1pm, and you need to book ahead.

Is it suitable for a toddler?

Not really, the tours are aimed at ages 5 and up, partly because of the uneven ground and track crossings.

How long does the tour take?

Around 90 minutes for the guided tour.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Most of the site works fine, but track crossings and changes in ground level make some parts difficult. Staff are there to help.
