WHERE

Birmingham

What it’s like

A small contemporary art and craft gallery with changing exhibitions, film screenings and workshops in artist studios.

This is more of a browse-and-look visit than a hands-on one. The exhibitions rotate through contemporary craft and art, and there's the odd film screening thrown in, so what you actually get to see depends entirely on when you turn up. If your kids are the sort who'll happily wander a small gallery space and ask questions about what's on the walls, that's the appeal here.

The workshops are where it gets more interactive. They're community-run sessions rather than a fixed kids' programme, so it's worth thinking of them as a bonus if the timing lines up rather than something to plan a whole day around. There are also artist studios on site, which gives it a working, lived-in feel rather than a polished museum one.

Opening hours are shorter than you might expect: 11am to 4pm most days, stretching to 5:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. That's not a huge window, especially midweek. It suits a shortish visit slotted in around something else rather than the main event of the day.

Plan your visit

What is there for kids to actually do?

It's mainly contemporary craft and art exhibitions to look at, plus occasional film screenings. There are also community workshops and artist studios, which add a bit more to see and do when they're running.

What are the opening hours?

11am to 4pm Wednesday to Thursday and on Sunday, and 11am to 5:30pm Friday and Saturday. It's closed the rest of the week based on that.

Do we need to book ahead?

There's no booking link listed, so it looks like a turn-up-and-see-what's-on kind of visit.

How long should we plan to stay?

Given it's a gallery space with exhibitions and studios rather than a big attraction, it's more of a shorter visit than a full day out.
