Birmingham
What it’s like
A small Birmingham gallery of paintings, ceramics and jewellery, with a sculpture garden to wander round in summer.
This is one for a quieter kind of visit rather than a big day out. The rooms hold exhibitions of paintings, ceramics and jewellery, which suits a browse rather than a full-on explore, and older kids who like looking at how things are made will get more out of it than a toddler who wants to touch everything.
Come summer, the Sculpture Garden opens up outside, and that's the bit to save for last if you're going with children. It gives them somewhere to move about after the stillness of the gallery rooms, and it's a nicer note to end on than another room of paintings.
It's open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5.30pm, so no Sundays or Mondays if you're planning around a weekend. There's free parking right outside on Mary Vale Road plus two more free spots a short walk away, and if you're coming by bus the 11a or 84 stop on Linden Road nearby. Bournville train station is about five minutes on foot too, so it's an easy one to reach without the car.
There's a gift shop on the way out, which is handy if a small sculpture or piece of jewellery catches someone's eye. Don't expect a café or lots of hands-on activities though. This one's about looking rather than doing.
