What it’s like

Free contemporary art gallery with hands-on workshops like making your own ceramic pumpkins or trying watercolours.

This is a first-floor gallery space showing contemporary art, and the bit that'll actually get your kids involved is the workshops. There's a ceramic pumpkins session where they make their own, and a watercolour workshop if painting's more their thing. Otherwise it's browsing the exhibitions, which suits an older child who'll actually look rather than just run past the walls.

Entry is free, which makes it an easy one to fit into a weekend without worrying about ticket costs. Opening hours are generous too, 10am to 6pm Wednesday to Saturday, and a shorter 11am to 4pm on Sundays if you're passing on a lazy morning.

The catch is access. It's upstairs with no lift, so if you've got a buggy or a wheelchair in tow this one's off the list. There's free parking round the back with its own entrance, which is one less thing to think about once you're through the door.
