Kitchen Garden Cafe
WHERE
Birmingham
What it’s like
A café with a soft-mat play corner for the kids while you get a proper home-cooked lunch or a Sunday roast.
This is a café first, with a small play area of soft mats and toys tucked in for younger kids while the grown-ups eat something better than the usual soft play chips. It works if your day out is really about the food and the children just need somewhere to potter for twenty minutes between courses.
The menu covers breakfast, lunch, sandwiches and burgers, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options and a kids' menu too, so a fussy eater and a vegetarian parent can both order something they actually want. There's fair trade coffee and cakes if you're just popping in rather than staying for a full meal. Sunday roasts are the thing people book ahead for, and the site says they sell out most weekends, so that's not a turn-up-and-hope situation.
It's open 10am to 4pm every day, but the kitchen stops taking food orders at 3pm, so don't roll up at ten to four expecting lunch. Worth knowing too that the café sometimes closes early for private functions and weddings, which is a bit of a faff if you've planned your afternoon around it. There are party rooms if you're thinking birthdays, and it's dog friendly and has wifi if you need to keep half an eye on work between mouthfuls.
