What it’s like

Pick a piece of blank pottery, sit down and paint it, no experience needed and the studio fires it for you afterwards.

You turn up, pick something plain from the shelves, a mug, a bowl, whatever takes your kid's fancy, and spend a couple of hours painting it while someone else worries about the kiln. It's a sit-down, quiet-hands sort of activity rather than a running-about one, which makes it a decent option when you want an afternoon that doesn't involve a soft play scrum.

The studio fee is £10 a head just to sit at the table, and then the actual pottery piece is on top, anywhere from £18 for something small to £50 if you've got your heart set on a bigger item. So a family of four painting mugs is looking at more like £28 a person once you add it up, not a cheap afternoon, but you do walk out with something you actually keep rather than a wristband.

Sessions run for two hours, which feels about right for a painting session before hands start aching and patience runs out. There's a free drink and a snack thrown in while you paint, and if you fancy a proper grown-up evening of it, you can bring your own bottle after 4pm.

Parking is the one to plan around. It's free on Sundays and after 6pm, but any other time you're looking at the Jewellery Quarter multi-storey or feeding a meter, and it's a good twenty-minute walk from the city centre if you're not driving. The tram to St Paul's Square or the train to Jewellery Quarter Station are the easier options if you're coming from further out.
