What it’s like

Pick a piece from over 150 pottery designs, paint it at your own pace, then wait a week to collect the finished mug or plate.

You turn up, choose from more than 150 pieces of pottery, plates, mugs, teddy bears, and get stuck in with the paints while the coffee lounge does paninis and bagels behind you. There's no studio fee tacked on, which is nice given how easy it is for these places to sting you with extras. Babies get in on it too, with hand and footprint pottery painting, so it's not just one for the school-age crowd.

The gallery wall is worth a slow look while you're there, over 70 framed photos of customer pottery, which gives the little ones something to point at and gives you a decent idea of what your wonky mug might eventually look like glazed and fired. That's the one catch: nothing goes home the same day. Painted pieces get glazed and kiln-fired, and it's five to seven days before you're back to collect, so this is one for people who don't mind a second trip.

Opening hours run 10 till 4 most days and 10 till 6 on Saturdays, and there's no charge just to walk in and paint, you pay for the pottery itself. Booking isn't compulsory but they do advise it, so a phone call or email first saves you turning up to a full table. Parking is free on the street off Bearwood Road, which takes one small worry off the list.

Birthday parties run here too, with three package tiers to pick from, and if you want the place to yourselves after hours that's doable with a minimum of ten people.
