What it’s like

A free stroll through a Victorian glasshouse in Sefton Park, with plant trails and themed show gardens to spot along the way.

The main thing here is a wander through the glasshouse itself, working your way round the continents and spotting plants that turn out to be spices, medicines or the clothes on your back. It's free to get in, which is rare for somewhere this well kept, and the building and grounds are listed as fully accessible all year round, so a buggy isn't a problem.

If you time it right, the Community Show Gardens run for a couple of weeks in June, from the 10th to the 21st, closed on Saturdays, with activity sheets tied to Peter Pan and mini-beasts. That's the bit worth building a visit around if your kids need more than plants to look at, since the rest of the visit is fairly gentle, more a slow circuit than an attraction with a big reveal.

The opening hours take some remembering. It's open Sunday to Wednesday until 5pm, then just till 3pm on Thursday, and shut completely Friday and Saturday for what they call Life Celebrations. The cafe inside does light bites and sandwiches but shuts an hour before the building, so don't leave lunch until the last minute.

There's no booking link, so it looks like you just turn up on an open day. Given the short hours and the odd Friday and Saturday closure, it's one to check the day of the week before you set off rather than assume it's open like a normal park building.
